Streets of New York by Peter Funch

How to catch few pedestrians yawning at once while standing next to each other on one of New York's streets. Or the ones who are dressed on white, black or red? Or just the ones drinking coffee, or just children?

Peter Funch can and he does it. It takes hours of shots and a bit of work to put everything together, but the effect is great.

She was afraid to be seen as a chronicler of freaks, as most of here subjects were nudists, transvestites, giants, midgets, disabled and those, whose beauty wasn't that obvious. With her camera she was trying to show emotional truth hidden behind the masks.

"Freaks was a thing I photographed a lot," she wrote. "It was one of the first things I photographed and it had a terrific kind of excitement for me. I just used to adore them. I still do adore some of them. I don't quite mean they're my best friends but they made me feel a mixture of shame and awe. There's a quality of legend about freaks. Like a person in a fairy tale who stops you and demands that you answer a riddle. Most people go through life dreading they'll have a traumatic experience. Freaks were born with their trauma. They've already passed their test in life. They're aristocrats."
